Waking up sluggish and grumpy in the morning? Resist the urge to hit the snooze button and pull the covers back over your head. How you start your day sets the tone for the rest of the day. And while every day may not be perfect, try these three simple suggestions to help you wake up happier.
1. Say a prayer of gratitude and thanksgiving before you jump out of bed.
All too often, we jump straight out of bed when the alarm clock goes off without ever pausing to give thanks. It’s too easy to allow the blaring sound of our alarm clock to dictate our next move. But instead, sit up gently and place your feet on the ground. Stretch up and take a few deep breaths in and out. Then express gratitude for rest, sleep, and a new day. Taking just a few moments to reflect on something you’re grateful for can spark the positive mindset that fuels you throughout the day.
2. Drink a glass of water before you drink anything else.
Wait! Before you start that coffee, pour yourself a glass of water. Starting your day with water has many key benefit. It helps you to release toxins from your body, hydrates you and may even jump start your metabolism. I’m more apt to drink the water first thing if it’s right near me. So keep a bottle or small carafe of water nearby for that early morning thirst quencher.
3. Pass on the phone and social media first thing in the morning.
This may sound odd, but I don’t feel the need to check my phone, answer emails, turn on the tv, and check social media upon waking up. Why? Because I simply don’t want to disturb my peace with the distractions of noise, busyness, and negativity. There will be plenty of time left in the day for that. Ease into your morning and just say no to the phone. When your mind is free, there’s more space to invite in the good energy and peaceful vibes.
